Notice the small try
Instead of focusing only on the end result, notice the moment your child begins: “You gave that a try even though you weren’t sure.” This helps effort feel worthwhile.
Confidence in young children often grows through small, everyday moments: having a go, talking about a feeling, trying again after a wobble, or discovering that there is more than one way to be brave.
Young children do not always have the words to explain why something feels difficult. A story gives them a little distance. They can notice what a character is feeling, wonder what might help, and talk about the situation without feeling that the conversation is only about them.
Picture books can also show children that confidence does not have to mean being the loudest, fastest or first. It can mean taking one small step, asking for help, trying in your own time or feeling proud that you had a go.

Some children jump straight in while others prefer to watch first. Giving a child time to understand a new situation can make the eventual step feel safer and more achievable.
Pause during a story and ask simple questions such as “How do you think they feel?” or “What could help them now?” There is no need for a perfect answer.
Children benefit from seeing that a wobble, spill, wrong turn or unfinished attempt does not end the adventure. Mistakes can simply become part of what happens next.
A short phrase such as “small tries count” or “you can go at your own pace” can give a child language to use the next time something feels uncertain.
Lumina League is a UK children’s picture-book series for ages 3–7 about friendship, kindness, courage, confidence and everyday feelings. The characters support children through their adventures rather than simply fixing everything for them.
